BTB Awards Watch

Before we post our BTB February News Round Up later today, we thought we'd treat you to a visual feast of what the guys were wearing on the red carpet this awards season....
The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, February 8th 2015

Michael Keaton in an unusually
textured double-breasted tux, which
appeals to our BTB sense of the
unpredictable. Apparently, he refused
to give up the designer when asked.
David Beckham in Tom Ford, an
effortlessly stylish combination from
one of our BTB Hero Designers.

There are an awful lot of things to
admire about Tom Hiddleston, but in
Alexander McQueen, he is a testament
to towering, easy elegance.

We do like Henry Cavill, but his publicist
needs taking aside for a stern talking to,
having allowed him to pose thus, with
BT askew! Tut, tut. The haughty,
confident pose just falls flat!

Eddie Redmayne sported a single-breasted midnight blue velvet Giorgio Armani ensemble. A little much for his slight frame? Or just right?

The Staples Centre, Downtown Los Angeles, February 8th 2015

Rapper Rick Ross,
2012 MTV Hottest MC in the Game,
led the February BT controversies
(see the Round Up for what followed)
by not only wearing a clip-on BT...
...but failing to notice when it 'malfunctioned'.
This, frankly, turned us pale and completely
negated the splendour of the electric blue tux!
We had to have a little lie down!

Why, oh why does Chris Brown never quite
get it right? As we've quoted before, Trunk Club
sales VP Michael Barkin calls this a "... brutally
classless look..." when a man "... unties his bow
tie during an event and wears it hanging from
his neck... Just take it off!"
Charli XCX flew the feminine flag with
a pink BT/white Moschino suit combination.
If pink can be rock 'n' roll, surely this is it?

One who rarely gets it wrong - Pharrell Williams graced the Grammys red carpet in a grey Adidas suit, complete with cropped pants, made with a 3M reflective fabric which causes it to turn white in photos - a bit like Bond's invisible car (Die Another Day, 2002)! Needless to say, his BT matched perfectly!
Is it us, or is it weird to write 'Adidas' and 'red carpet' in a single sentence...?

The Dolby Theatre, Hollywood, Los Angeles, February 22nd 2015
Host, Neil Patrick Harris arrived on the red carpet in this unexpected grey cashmere Brunello Cucinelli ensemble, which almost had us thinking Spring had sprung! He underwent five outfit changes during the show - a blue velvet single-breasted Tom Ford; a burgundy single-breasted Valentino; a shawl collar single-breasted Dunhill of deepest back; and Stefano Pilati's first double-breasted custom tuxedo from Zegna Couture. Of course, there was the 'Birdman' outfit change as he took to the stage wearing only his torso and tighty whities - his only appearance sans BT (Ref. GQ)

J K Simmons gets romantic in Fedora
and waistcoat. Just visible is the pocket
square perfectly colour-matched to his
wife's gown. Awwwww.
Kevin Hart in reverse tradition - Lanvin
white tuxedo/black peak lapels, black
shirt, black BT, Dior shoes. Not sure it works.
No, we're sure!

Eddie Murphy led the White Knight charge
with the more traditional white tux/peak lapels,
black BT, white shirt. Other Knights were
Adrien Brody, Benedict Cumberpatch, Jeff
Goldblum and JayZ (Ref. GQ)
The most dramatic colour departure
had to have been David Oyelowo in
this maroon single-breasted Dolce
& Gabbana ensemble

Eddie Redmayne swapped BAFTA velvet
for this single-breasted Alexander
McQueen blue silk

Rapper Common made this unusual
combination work - white shirt, white
BT and blue single-breasted Prada tux

Michael Keaton swapped 'unusual' for simple elegance with this Ralph Lauren suit. Elegant, despite the seemingly uncomfortable pose!

So, that was formal Awards season 2015!
Shawl collars were a red carpet staple, and blue was unexpectedly popular across all ceremonies. The BAFTAs seemed a little more dour and the Grammys were unusually formal, whilst there was some daring at the Oscars. In general, white was well done and grey made a surprising appearance. Whilst Neil Patrick Harris flirted with a burgundy Valentino, David Oyelowo went full-throttle maroon D&G. Dinner suits were more or less balanced by the number of tuxedos with non-matched pants, but these still tended to work.
The bow tie, as expected, reigned supreme, though there were very few surprises. We BowTieBanditz found this interesting, given that ZuZu Kim's daring and innovative bow ties made up part of the nominees gift bag contents.
ZuZu Kim innovative bow ties formed part of the Oscar Nominee goodie bags.
See BTB News Round Up for February for more on this...
Only a few of our favourite celebs opted against wearing a bow tie completely - Cuba Gooding Jr at the BAFTAs and Idris Elba at the Oscars. We missed them, but they looked great anyway!

We felt oddly bereft seeing Idris Elba without
his evening wear BT staple. Still, he cut more
than a dash in his dark blue Ermenegildo
Zegna suit, matching necktie and Christian
Louboutin shoes (**whisper - we're guessing
he  didn't want to upstage the nominees**).

Cuba Gooding Jr at BAFTA, embellishing
his black necktie with a black/white
accented scarf. Unusual! We like It!
